Is this the surface skimmer? I believe this chould be adjusted
Anyone using this? good? I've tried those taiwan/china ones before which float on a ring of trapped air, but they are always unstable (ie: filteration too powerful and they sink into the water, introduces lots of air into filter..sometimes stalling filter..
-know where to get one?

it's touted as eheim sludge extractor, isn't it?
in practical usage this is less effective than the circular ones as it only skims in one direction, and you're not supposed to leave it on all the time, only opening the valve when you want to clean the surface
i've been using the taiwanese ones for a long time now
just adjust the thing such that the waterline is at the 1/2 mark of the transparent part
even if your water level falls, it'll still be ok, unless the bottom is blocked
i don't have a problem with trapped air
me using the 3535 surface extractor ...
but sadly to say, eheim has disappoint me this time despite with the impeccable design of the filtration system
although compared to the taiwan made surface extractor, it is slimmer in design, but one major drawback is that it tends to get stuck at the opening and jams very easily ... floating leaves, duckweeds, and even three of my otos got stuck in it!
for the taiwan made ones, it is extracting from all ard the directions (circular), whereas eheim one is only one direction
of coz, the good thing abt the eheim one is that it self adjust very readily

Err... not sure if you are interested to try. It is mentioned that some fish like Black Mollies, Swordtails, Guppies, Platies can gulp in the oily scum while they are at the surface. I used to keep Swordtails in my 4ft tank and the surface seem clean. But now left one -- and it started getting oily again.----------------

apart from introducing those mollies, does keeping those floating plants like frogbits help?[:]
Let us work together to preserve the world for our children to inherit by being responsible to our surroundings. Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, bubbles and memories.
actually, the oily film is the nitrifying bacteria coz of the ammonia level in the upper strata of the tank .... a bit of the film is good, but if there is too much, it can upset the exchange of oxygen between surface air and water surface
having a surface extractor works the same principle as overflow system ... just that it serves dual purpose

i don't see how ammonia levels between the upper level and the lower levels of the tank will differ?
oily film is caused by fish food. I was feeding this flake food by some uk brand (well it was cheap at $3 for a big can).
won't be buying that brand anymore...
because ammonia is lighter than water

ammonia in water is soluble.
