i would concur with the hitachi ebt
nice and bright, and ime it doesn't encourage green spot algae
I think Watt is everything to planted tank, like RAM is to PC.....
colin | The Wilderness and Forest | FTS
you can think of it in that way
plants grow best under certain colours of light, but it's not really an issue when you have enough intensity to make up for it
i'm more concerned about how it looks to our naked eye
if the tube is some weird colour, your tank will look unnatural
Thanks guys....
so it's daylight 6500k
or hitachi EBT
I have read conflicting reports on the effects of color spectrum on the plant growth.
Personally, I tend to believe that the effect of color temperature on the plant is minimal (of course don't use a blue only tube). I have changed a few tubes... Dennerle Trocal Plant (very orangy), daylight 6500K & a taiwanese pinkish one. No difference detected.
I grew to like the daylight 6500K & warm white (Dennerle, maybe 4000K kind of color) combination. It gives a very nice warm, yet vibrant colors.

bc, that appears to be the case because no one can agree on what kind of light plants need
i was watching discovery channel and they were saying that plants grow best under red to near IR light *shrug*
I did try cool white only.... but end up the tank looks yellowish and the color of the fish looks dull but using the pinkish tube(taiwan) looks better the green looks greener and the fishes look brighter and colorful.
how can you tell the color 6500K is it writen on the tube... like philips 36w is only state daylight and OTHER brands dont even state...???
see the site for more info

think as long the tube is listed as daylight, the colour temperature will be around 6500k.

You can learn to read the numbers on the tube.
I can't remember for what brand: 827 = 2700K, 830 = 3000K, etc.
Generally,
Incadescent = 2700K
Warm white = 3000K
Cool white = 4000K
Daylight = 6500K
Actinic = 10,000K

THANKS for the big help[] you guys are so cool expert in lightings.... lux
I'm using NEC HG (Highgrade). When I bought the tank together with the lights, there were NEC HG. When I bought a new set of lights, I change the UV HG to NEC HG and my plants are doing fine. Understand that NEC HG is about 7000K and it cost much less compare to those 7000K meant for aquarium.
great! if you find it works, stick to it and save ur $$$ on fish/plants then. just remember to change the tube every year.
agreed
if it works, just go ahead and use it
plant tubes etc aren't really necessary
i find my plants used to grow just fine with hitachi ebt

Hi,
If you're interested, I could get for you at $12 per piece. But how many do you need? I would have to order them and it might take a few days to have them delivered.
Rgds,
I use Aquarelle tubes, they also cost $12 each. I think they are 10000K. I use 4 tubes on 4X2X2 tank with diy co2.
The plant are not doing to well []. I also have a small tank 30x18x18 with sylvania triphospur and grolux, the plant is doing much better but then I use more substrate fertiliser with no CO2. Maybe the red spectrum on the grolux help the plant growth that's missing in the aquarelle light, well that's what the guy that sell the tubes told me.
FYI,
Hitachi EBT don't come in PLs. Only FLs. Also they come in 2, 3 and 4ft only. No half sizes.
I bought a second hand 2 ft set come with 1.5 feet Hitachi EBT (The owner bought the tube from hardware shop somewhere in Balestier). I have to admit that 1.5 feet HEBT is really hard to find.----------------
