Hi Peter
From what I know, active carbon is used to remove any medication after application. However, it should not be used as a long term media filter as it may also drain some of the nutrients from the tank.
Just my two cents!
hi folks,
i realise my 2 ft tank is very prone to multiple death of my fishes when i added in more than 5 fishes at once. could be that i've overloaded the bio system in my tank. the last major death of fishes i had ... n02, n03 and pH all look ok. i didn't test for ammonia. i've less than 20 small fishes in my tank. i'm thinking of putting active carbon in my overhead filter to remove any excessive toxins. what do you think ? any side effect with using active carbon as a filter medium ? thks.

you should remove the active carbon after 14 days.
otherwise, the toxins absorbed will leech back into the water.

if the plants in the tank are not growing well, there's probably a surfeit of ammonia and nitrite. Test for both. All things said, i think it's best to stop adding new fish for the time being, until you see all existing fish thriving. Note: are the fish inside breathing fast (and with flushed gills), even if they are not gasping at the surface? Change the water.
