I am new and my 4'x2'x2' planted tank is more or less stable (I think). Already have 6 SAE and 50 Yamato & Malayian shrimps. Will start introducing other fishes. Thinking of Cardinal tetra (50) and Rummy-nosed tetra (20). Other than that I am also interested to have Rainbow fishes. Which LFS or farms will have most varieties? How many will you suggest?

How about Congo tetra? Is it more difficult?

    Thanks.

just be mindful that some of the rainbowfishes can harass towards other fishes. Even the dwarf neon rainbow has been disturbing my shrimps.

    wstam,

IMO, the fish should keep it small in sizes altogether. Congo & Rainbow + Cardinal & Rednose will make the tank look out of place. Furthermore, cardinal won't grow very big(size) as a result of bigger fishes around completing or bullying them for food, unless you want to overfeed.

I think Sissor Tail Rasbora + Cardinal looks fine though they are from different parts of the world.

I tried that. Sissor Tail is extremely peaceful and they love to school and with the combination of Cardinal in school as well...wow!..serene sight...

Then Sissor tail and Red nose combination don't look nice as I feel they looked the same (from far ).

    just my views.......

Thanks all for the input so far. Will check out the various lfs. How many should I get to start a small group of rainbow? How about congo tetra? I am also reading the apisto threads with much interested. Is it good to mix all these fishes? Is apisto too ambitious for newbie? I know the tank may not be nice with so many different kind of fish. Just a learning process and will see if I like any particular one more.

BTW, my biggest concern right now is the slightly cloudy water. This is the 3rd week for my new 4’ tank. It has been crystal clear from 4th day onward until last weekend. Not sure if it’s related to the how weather? Just changed water last night but still cloudy today. Any suggestion? May have to wait till it is clear before adding more fishes.

just bear in mind rainbowfishes seem to be very agressive against shrimps, so if you like shrimps, consider giving the rainbows a miss.
