Marble hatchets do appear at the stores every now and then. I saw a tank full of them during the AQ round-island farm visit.
They're primarily surface feeders so make sure you got flakes at home. Better still, have some flies or ants. They simply love live insects.

Haha! But i believe LFS on the east do not really sell them.. Cuz i am looking up and down for it..Went to Qian hu but also nvr see any..
Probably in the east that might be the case, but I used to see them frequently at the LFSes in the west and north.
I saw some during the farm visit, maybe got a few at Mainland Tropical. Did not notice them much but I think Seaview had them too.

It's normally in the show gallery, opposite the discus, not in the open area. They would usually have 2 types of marbel hatchet, the silver and the spotted ones as well. Quite a few types.Originally Posted by hirowen

I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
Just take note to have some cover for your tanks should you decide to have them. Or make sure your water level is not close to the top of your tank. Else you would find them on your floor sooner or later... as they have a tendency to jump... I used to own 3 marble hatchets... but they all jumped out as I do not have a covered tank...

Thanks Joe. Point noted. Btw i think i can only lower the water level, cuz cover up the tank will increase the temperature.
They usually will not jump unless they are disturbed or highly stressed by someone or something in the tank. I have a large silver hatchet - Gasteropelecus sternicla, in the tank with an assortment of small rasboras, tetras, guppies, plus other small fishes, and it has not jumped even though the water level is close to the top. I have some floating plants which cover a very very small area, though I doubt that stops it from ever wanting to jump, should it decide to do so. However, with a full cover of floating plants, that would definitely reduce their tendency to jump.
As long as it feels happy in its surroundings and is not subjected to constant stress, it should not jump. Hatchets only jump as a method of escape from predators, if my references in the available aquarium literature were correct.
However it pays to be careful. If covering the tank is a problem, use those fine-meshed nylon netting, much like those that we use for tying mosses. Allows proper air circulation above the tank, yet keeps the jumpers from jumping out. Remember, even a small 1cm gap can give them enough space for jumping out.

I only worry that it will give them a shock when my auto timer click off.
Yes a sudden turn off of the lights can shock them. In that case, let the aquarium lights turn off first, and then turn off your room lights. That way they will be less shocked by the sudden change in lighting.

Haha! Hope that i've book out from camp on that day.
Anyone seen the Glass Hatchet or the Black Wing around in any LFS?
Mostly the ones sold are Silver and Marble
Hatchets can jump up to 2 feet out of the water. Keep that in mind yeah?
I had the impression that the maximum recorded height they can jump up to was 6 ft. Can't remember it was from a documentary or from an article. Anyone can verify?Originally Posted by XnSdVd
