simon, you're not helping my itchy finger syndrome.
haven't been reading much about cameras lately.
could you or someone please let me know the pros and con of the usm and non-usm model? maybe a ballpark figure compared the the sellers price?
    thanks!

I already don't have this one.

The Canon EF 100 mm F2.8 Macro comes in USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) and non USM model. Basically, it focus a lot faster with USM. However, with macro lenses, this function is not an added bonus as most users tend to focus manually for precision control. Used price for the USM model is about S$750 to S$900. New price from S$980 to S$1100. The non USM model is now defunct and can be bought used from S$400 to S$600.

In my opinion, if you are going this direction, grab the lens NOW! If you change your mind, you can let it go with almost NO depreciation.

I believe optical wise, it shld be the same as the USM version. There are only pros about USM, focus speed (even u using AF), silent motor.

The non-usm version is no longer in production, so these lens are worth to get, since its half the price of that of the usm version

    benny,
i have an EOS 30 with the 28-105mm usm lens.
from what my friend told me the lens is a good keep.
i've pretty much sent this camera to cold storage because of the time and cost for film.

after seeing the pictures in the forum and watching you guys go off at ben's...
i'm starting to rethink about the quality of my compact digital (actually bought it for my diving trips, sea & sea DX5000G).

also, i've kinda avioded digital SLR from the perception of the model life and cost. advances in the CCD area is whats moving fast now from what a pro-underwater photographer told me. hence my apprehension on a digital SLR purchase.

Lens don't depreciate as much as the cameras. If you pick up this macro lens, I'm sure you can sell it off the pretty much the same price. But I can't say the same for cameras.

If budget is a consideration, I would suggest a good flash (used) and perhaps a used D60/10D/300D (around around 1K or less). This way, you get the best of everything at the lowest price. Whilst some may say that these are out of production models, it does not mean that you cannot take eye popping pictures.

a very good thing about the Canon 100mm macro is that it is internal focusing. meaning the front element of the lens does not protrude/retract or rotate during focusing.

the good thing about the USM version is of course the fast and silent AF. it also has full-time manual, meaning you can AF to the subject, then manual focus for final precision using the focus ring. not all lenses can do full-time manual.
