Finnage are shorter for some variants, stomach are rounder and fuller (sometimes you can even see the egg sacs) and when viewed from the top, the difference are visible for matured specimens.

adult female bettas also have a white 'dot' on their stomach, between their ventral (pelvic) fins. that's the tell tale sign. you can't be sure just by looking at the finnage of the betta.
Ripe females usually have a couple of female lines along the flank... More easily seen on lighter coloured fish...
