I have some hornworts floating in my newly planted tank.

Today, I saw the older part of my hornworts melted. That's after I added some lushgrow aqua in it.

What maybe the causes for the hornwort to melt?
I don't see melting in my other plants (yet.).

hornwort seems a bit sensitive to changing water conditions. I find they do best in no-fert, no CO2 tanks with little current.

Not sure whether they are sensitive but they do grow like crazy in no (or very infrequently) fert, non-CO2 tanks. More so in cool water. Mine grow like CRAZY. Chryl, if you need replacement, let me know. Else will be throwing excess away and that is so wasteful...

Suggest you add your ferts in smaller amounts over a period...

What drives the growth of plants? Light, CO2 and nutrients. You have light (enough? most have too much), nutrients? (You added some...Aqua doesn't have PO4 in it nor does our tap water..too little), CO2? (Are you using it? Add enough?). Hornwort might be a tad sensitive towards changes but they do well if you give them good light, CO2 and nutrients.

Had them once before I gave them all away. They have become a pain to trim (weekly). They grow too well in my tank (high light, no CO2 and weekly dose of liquid fert). Just to take note is that I have many small fishes in this 2 ft tank (60+ maybe ) then. Maybe the bioload high good for these type of plants.

Thank you all for the replies.

These hornworts have new healthy growth but I noticed that some older parts of the plant were melting after the dosing. The new growths are still doing very well, reddish tips and compact.

I float them around in my 3feet tank with the following specs:
    Tank size: 90x40x40cm
    Lighting: 110W
    CO2: Pressurised Cylinder with 1bps
Substrate: Lapis sand with root monster (no base fert)
    Fan: 24/7

I was suspecting that these fellas can't take too much of the liquid fert. I dosed 10drops of the Aqua and the next day, I saw the melting started.

    Peter, Budak,
Its probably like what you said, changes in water condition could have caused it.

Diki, yeah..when these hornworts are happy, they grow like weeds.
I'm growing them hoping to set up some small killie cube tanks hopefully.

Justikanz Thanks for the offer. I still have a handful healthy ones to grow. When I run out of them, I know who to look for then.

    Cheers
