what should i do when water turn cloudy? the tank is 3 weeks old. the water was clear from 4th day till monday where it started turning cloudy. any useful water treatment (like those purification bacteria)? i did add 10 rummynosed tetra on sat. could this be the cause? have 50 shrimps and 6 SAE from week 1.

will those ammonia, nitrite or nitrate test kit give any clues?

    thanks in advance.

It's called new tank sydrome. It is due to an explosion of bacteria population.

Just let it be. It will clear by itself after few days.

Totally agree with Simon.... don't add funny funny thing into your tank. Juz do some water change say 30~40% and see if it improves. Monitor your fish awhile.... if they seem fine, juz let it be.
    Cheers!!

    wstam,
don't worry, you tank is still being cycled.
10 rummy noses is really nothing for your 4x2x2.
try to plant as heavily as you can in the beginning.
after cycling, your tank size should be able to handle
100-200 tetras without much problem. go for 1 species
if you want to have a visual impact.

    Thanks all.

Water is getting clearer today. A lesson learnt: a small but significant bio load is required to kick start the cycle. Initial few SAE and 50 shrimps are not enough (?). When I next put in 50 or 100 tetra will the water cloudy again as the bio load changed?

    it depends
the cycle is a dynamic process and will always be changing the moment you change the environment
but if your filter is already established odds are the bacteria will grow there instead of blooming in the water
