    Out of curiosity,

What are your expectations of an ideal fish shop? What makes you go back to that fish shop to purchase the stuff that you want?

Is it because of location, space of shop, variety of products n livestock, service etc? Would greatly appreciate if gurus out there could give comments??

    Thanks!

Knowledgeable owner/salesperson in the shop. Must know what he/she is selling. Variety is a good thing to have too, but some shops are more specialised in this or that. Very difficult to find one that has everything....which makes it fun too.

Is it better to have a "rojak" shop where you can find all kinds of stuff?

Or a shop which carries a reliable middle range and a cheaper range of products instead of having products from the high end to low end in terms of price?

Comfortable air: where no shopkeepers stare/stand near you and make you feel scruntised, like c328. But must have the spaciousness of Gratiola.

Variety: This is a "of course!" especially driftwoods and rock like Gratiola had.

Prices: In the middle will be good enough for me.

Location: Definately has to be easily accessible to me.

    a) Good service,
    b) Knowledgeable,
    c) Friendly,
    d) Good Pricing on item

I usually set up a tank according to what the particular lfs has. I do not like to drag my friends/colleague around multiple lfs to get the stuff. Just my opinion.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.

Variety of fish, plants and goods, friendly but not pushy owners, enough people visiting (too few people will feel uncomfortable as owner pays attention to you), good pricing and familiarity...

As long as the place is cool... not like c328 on a hot June afternoon. Aircon is a very nice plus

it'll be good to have a label with descriptions of the needs of the fish... something like an extra information to caring for them.. don't need to be elaborate but can probably have a short feature of them..

    that will be useful

correct names rather than ambiguous common names help too!

Sometimes names also quite "bo pian" for the LFS owners. The more chinese educated ones will probably only know those fishes by their chinese names and so it's quite difficult for them to put up the correct names. If their suppliers also give them chinese names, so quite difficult lar...

Sometimes more than 1 fish can be known by the same common names, and really don't expect the aunties and uncles to put up the Latin names!

But really appreciate those LFS who put up names of fish in the tanks in English, like Ben's. Helps alot for people like me who is trying hard to figure out what fish is what.

Oh yes, latin names are a definate plus!
And for the love of fish, a shopkeeper who speaks english... It gets a little stupid when they try to speak to an indian guy in hokkien... Poor guy was like probably thinking "I'm just looking for a filter... what are you saying??"

I actually spoke to a LFS owner about provision of scientific names/latin names and simple care sheet.

He told me that not all shops are willing to put up the names, if a particular fish (esp new to the trade) is selling well, by not providing the scientific names, he could actually deter (to a certain extent) other LFS from getting their suppliers to bring in the same fish

Woah... I had no idea there was that much competition... but... what's to stop another LFS from just taking a picture?

Yes, there is always strong competition between LFSs... Once I was carrying Endler's and walk into a Pasir Ris farm, the owners started crowding around me trying to find out where to find the 'expensive small guppy'. They would want to be among the first to breed and introduce it to the market... they talk about sending taxi driver friends to go LFS looking for rare fish, buy them back and try to breed for sales...

That's why i say... to a certain extent lor. Spying among the trade cannot be totally eliminated, as customers, we sometimes oso unwittingly become spies when we talk to our LFS owners and update them on the happenings on other shops... distributors also talk to different LFS owners etc.

Aiyah, business aspect of things no so innocent, quite sad when you think about it right?

Anyway, the LFS owner agreed that it would be great if he could provide accurate scientific names of fishes he's carrying and if possible care sheets as well, but by doing it, he will end up hurting his own business, that's why he doesn't do it.
