The Malayan Nature Journal Vol 57, Part 3, Nov 2005 features a survey of freshwater fishes found in Perlis State Park, Malaysia, by Amiruddin Ahmad (Universiti Sains Malaysia) and Abdullah Samat (University Kebangsaan Malaysia).
The survey is the result of two expeditions in 2000 and 2001 in the Perlis State Park that borders on Thailand. 15 additional species were recorded, bringing the Park's total count to 31 species.
Species found were:
Cypriniformes
•*Barbonymus gonionotus
• Barbonymus schwanenfeldii (tinfoil barb). New record for the park.
• Devario regina
• Hampala macrolepidota
• Labiobarbus leptocheilus (ikan kawan). New record.
• Mystacoleucus marginatus
• Osteochilus hasselti. New record.
• Oxygaster anomalura. New record. The authors note that this species ranges throughout the peninsula and reaches the Mekong.
• Rasbora parviei
• Puntius binotatus. The authoes note the presence of two similar species, P. binotatus and P. banksi in the peninsula. The species present in the park has a small black blotch underneath the dorsal fin and at the caudal peduncule. This species (or P. banksi) is also found in Singapore
•Puntius lateristriga. This species is also native to Singapore.
Balitoridae
• Schistura robertsi. The only balitorid in the park and the FIRST record of this species in Peninsula Malaysia (apart from Langkawi). The park marks the southernmost limit of the species.
Siluriformes
•*Batasio havmolleri. Called 'baung tikus' or mouse catfish by the locals, this small (SL=57 mm) is recorded elsewhere in northen peninsula Malaysia and favours flowing waters. New record for the park.
• Hemibagrus bleekeri. New record for the park.
• Ompok bimaculatus. New record for the park. Also known as Tapah bemban.
•*Silurichthys hasselti (Hasselt's leaf catfish)
• Amblyceps mangois.
• Clarias leiacanthus. Also found in Singapore's forest streams.
Beloniformes
• Hemirhamphodon pogonognathus. Forest halfbeak. Also native to Singapore.
Cyprinodontiformes
• Aplocheilus panchax. New record for the park.
Synbranchiformes
• Monopterus albus. Swamp eel. New record for the park.
Mastacembelidae
• Mastacembelus sp. New record for the park.
Perciformes
•*Betta pugnax. Found in stream behind a low cost housing construction site.
•*Trichogaster trichopterus. New record for the park.
• Channa gachua
• Channa striata. The ubiquitious haruan.
