If I remember correctly, it seems to have started almost at the same time in Malaysia and Singapore.
In Malaysia, they're called Luo Hans and flowerhorn. Singapore, they're called kirin (qilin)
anyone knows who r the ones introduce LH into the market first?the malaysians, taiwanese, chinese, japanese.hong kies or singaporean?free to comment...

Err.. a bit off-topic...
Actually, I think it is a Singaporean who first bred this, which caught the eye of a Malaysia who lives in Ipoh. This Malaysian 'improved' these hybrids which caught the hearts of many people around Asia. Plus all the rumours about such a hybrid and the purposeful jacking up of the prices...
But I never blamed the Singaporean who bred such a hybrid(s) because he did not really publicized his fishes although he bred them quietly for a couple of years.
Honestly, I think the craze started in Malaysia first.
yup agree with chris.saw sum specimens during aquarama 01 but not that hot at the time.i think the craz started after aquarama...

Hybrid or not, this is still my favorite fish at home
That's great, cos you like the fish for its own sake, rather than it's 'speculative' value, supposed myths or are just following the crowd. I would like to know honestly what the people who are buying luohan and luohan only what exactly motivates them - the fish, the ideas surrounding it, the snob value or what?
i love the shape of this fish
LSZ,
Other than the usual trimac genes, what other possible cichlids are mixed in this fish's ancestry?
Thx
if talking abt this particular fish of yours..
i will of coz put in trimac
i also recognised guapote blood, in fact i strongly suspect Umbie inside. It has a lot of fine "jewels"
but at the same time, i dont think these are from Texas.
But with all hybrids, this can only be speculation at best, coz many offsprings may not readily show parental traits all the time..
i cannot be sure if Midas is in your fish, but i know they 100% are in some of the later ones.
so far, your fish has a classic Trimac shape..a fat trimac.
some other Luohans exibit other shapes actually. SOme resemble texas, some are more round they tend to Midas, i even had saw some which i am pretty sure have jaguar/motaguanese or Fredie blood inside
it is endless!
LSZ,
Thanks for the info.
After searching thru the web for pics, I think my LH has umbie blood.
.
I'm still trying to pinpoint the rest.
I also agree that he's a fat trimac looking fish...
what baffles me is that the Umbie is a 2ft fish.
and its body shape also drastically different from trimac
thats my guess it is up to you to speculate too
Uh Oh, looks like I better prepare a 5-6' tank for it. After hybridising, I guess its max size should be some where bigger than a trimac (what's the max size for a trimac?) and 2'
What's the growth rate like for a 8-9" fish?
I think my LH is still growing at 0.5" / mth
Is this fast or slow?
Just out of interest, anyone having >1' cichlids at home?
