How do we tell the difference between the 2 ?

Merah suppose to be more red but then Maculatus can also be very red depending on the water condition. If both are same size how we can differentiate between the two ?

To me they look very similar from photo and from seeing real fish in LFS. I think some LFS also anyhow label.

you come to the right place my friend haha. the key is that merah has a ring around the flank spot, and this ring is contrasted against the base colour, maculatus is much more diffused.

    B. maculatus

    B. merah

why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Is merah able to breed in a planted tank? I think I've got a few babies of merah.

Brigatte can be purchase at Ben's at Tiong Bahru or Y618 (not always have). San Aquatics have few thousand of Merah for you to choose $0.80 each.

Brigatte usually is $1 a piece.

BA just go with what you see, the males are usually more colourful in body and finnage, the females should be a heavier looking fish, look at the 2 pics of choys i'd say they were both males. hope this helps.
