How are these buggers related to the mantids (if at all)? Convergence?

They aren't... they are in the order of Neuroptera .. so that means they are flies technically.. you can actually see some resemblance to lace wings and the sort in that order..

No la... they not diptera..they are Neuroptera which i think somehow means hairy wings in latin. Actually depending on which tree you use it could be allied or could be not..
Yes.. you can use on your blog and No.. these are not native to singapore. They are native to southern ontario.. in fact in my location where i collected them there were only 2 species.. if you want species name let me recall it then i let you know..haha..
There are species taht are native to singapore.. i saw one when i was at Bukit timah hill...was really excited!!! but then i also know down there cannot collect.. i spent a long time on the side of the trail playing with it.. people think i was mad chasing a fly around and playing with it for a good 10mins.

not creepy thomas.. the word is cute.. or you can use adorable also can..
it was eating a Syrphid.. err... its a family in Diptera.. err.. its a fly.. but not a housefly.. The common housefly is usually in the family muscidae (the black and white lined ones) or a calliphoridae (those metallic green/blue ones) here in singapore..
Anyway..this "fly" that its eating is commonly found on flowers.. it hovers around like a bee and is commonly mistaken for one due to its colouration and the way it flies and sounds.
