They aren't... they are in the order of Neuroptera .. so that means they are flies technically.. you can actually see some resemblance to lace wings and the sort in that order..

[No la... they not diptera..they are Neuroptera which i think somehow means hairy wings in latin. Actually depending on which tree you use it could be allied or could be not..Originally Posted by budak

There are species taht are native to singapore.. i saw one when i was at Bukit timah hill...was really excited!!! but then i also know down there cannot collect.. i spent a long time on the side of the trail playing with it.. people think i was mad chasing a fly around and playing with it for a good 10mins.

it was eating a Syrphid.. err... its a family in Diptera.. err.. its a fly.. but not a housefly.. The common housefly is usually in the family muscidae (the black and white lined ones) or a calliphoridae (those metallic green/blue ones) here in singapore..
Anyway..this "fly" that its eating is commonly found on flowers.. it hovers around like a bee and is commonly mistaken for one due to its colouration and the way it flies and sounds.
Nope...not this species specifically.. unless you want to fly to Canada and find them..
eewwee! Pretty ugly for a fly. Such long neck.
