I don't think it will dissolve... Maybe it was pushed out from the driftwood by the roots or some fish goes round pushing it and it dropped to the substrate...
Stapling is indeed an option...
Can use black cotton thread too. By the time the line rots away, the plant should have adhered to the wood.
