    Hi,

Are there any algae eating fishes around with the following characteristics?

    1) Don't grow too big. (about 3cm)
    2) Don't disturb the plants & shrimps in the tank.
    3) Efficient in clearing algae.
    4) Easy to maintain.

By the way, would like to know how a OTO look like & how much it cost.

    Welcome to Aquatic Quotient!!

Different types of algae eater eat different types of algae.

If it's just brown algae you are trying to manage, the various species of Otocinclus species should serve you fine. Most of them grow up to 5 cm only. For spot algae, thread/hair algae, they are not as effective.

I'm moving this to freshwater fauna..

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

    Hi benny,

So for a 2ft tank, how many of OTO do I required? And do you have a pic of it? Pardon me, I really have no idea how it looks like.

Usually, it is suggested that 1 per 10 gallon, else there might not be enough algae to go round... And they are quite delicate creatures during the transport... So you probably will suffer from high motality rate...

    You asked for it!!

Would you like this in your tank? For 2 ft, I think 3 to 5 pieces will be more than enough to help with brown algae. For other algae, use other algae eaters.

HAHAHAHA... Benny, it don't think he will be able to identify an Oto in a LFS with the photo you posted...

But I still think the photo is a BEAUTY! I never noticed those silver scales near the mouth... Btw, is there a different variety in the market? I have seen a slightly greyish one and also a yellowish one...

Oto is short for Otocinclus, a genus of small New World catfishes.

Here at the FishBase species list for Otocinclus you can see a whole list of various species in this genus, of which the regular algae cleaning oto is the Otocinclus vittatus.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

The other one which we see is the Otocinclus affinis which C328 normally carries...

Nerites are very very good at removing spot algae... Sometimes, they will graze on BBA too...
