Height of Crypts

Hi folks,

I'm keeping some crypts in my 2 footer planted tank....the height is abt 10" only.....and my crypts are growing more dense n taller.....is there anyway to keep the crypts from growing so taller or even touch the water surface??

hmmm... plant growth is usually a good sign... have you considering swapping the species for a shorter one? Which species is it anyway?

Switch to the crypts that will not grow tall. Yah, what crypts do you have now? Switch to for example, C.parva, C.wendtii green/brown and/or C. wendtii tropica etc...

Sounds like C.balansae which can grow tall.

Trimming of course! Trim those old leaves away!

I had grown my C Wendii brown under both high and low illumination and for the former, the leaves lie close to the gravel whereas the converse is observed for the one under dark illumination. Of course, it depends on the species as well. You will not expect C Balanse to grow low.

i'm having C. wendtii tropica and Mi oya....both are growing too well in my case....thinking of shifting them to the back of the tank to form a background....and den get shorter crypts mentioned above to replace them in the mid area....i'm using 2x 15W (8000K) on my 2ft....

Same here as my C. wendtii also grows damn long .

Experimenting a different crypt (can't remember the name) and kept very near to the water surface and dangle the root between the bush of java fern and see the crypt all bunch up and bullated leaves form now after 2 weeks under in tense MH light . BTW, what is this crypt name ?

Mi oya can grow to 20-25cm. Any picture to show?

I used to grow my brown C Wendii the same way as you did and it turns out exactly the same way in your pic as well.

Also, I notice the stems will much shorter , leaves not melting easily, leaves bunch up together very closely under this high light condition.

So , is it light condition only make the difference vs the subtrate planting for the crypt even with root monster ?

Base fertilizer for the cryptos will help to make them continue to put out news leaves, less melting, stronger growth, but it does not necessary make them grow more compact.

I observed that the leaves tends to be waxy, thicker, broader, bigger under strong lights with roots fert enrichment.

When there is insufficient light and fert, the leaves tend to be thin, narrow, long, soft, matt and weak looking.
