For a planted tank, shrimp is mainly for clearing algae (as pointed out by benetay) and for chiclid tank, shrimp is for fish food.

also depends on what kind of shrimp, some shrimp cost more than the live tiger prawn in the supermarket leh.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

For me, if it is a normal tropical planted fish tank .. shrimps are more like scavengers to me. Finish up whatever food/algae/dirt that is left over in the tank.

Scavengers? Heehee .. it also helps to clear off the dead fish like tetras/guppies/rasboras..etc Save me the trouble to scope them out.

    HI,
Frontosas and shrimps do not mix! Your fronts will have a buffet.
    Cheers!
