hi all, i got these fish a year back, and since then i have tried to get some info on them, unfortunatly there is only scant knowledge, like where they originate, is west africa, breeding ? water parameters ?,
so ive been keeping them in same conditions as congo tets, but i would like to learn more about this regal looking fish, here are a couple of shots of the male, see what you lads think of them.

i think they are closest to the alestes and phenacogrammus group, i keep the ph around 6-6.4 they seem happiest at that, ive got the aqualog disc for characins, which shows quite a few pics of them but none show the extention on the anal fin?unless they were immature fish,
ive got a feeling they will spawn in a similar fashion to the congo's, but not any tank space at the moment.
    cheers, mick

oh..i just mentioned that because at first glance i thought they were Bathyaethiops caudomaculatus..but obviously not after i saw the pictures proper..
Hmm..i like these bigger characins... they would look great in a school of like 20-30 in a 4footer or something like that..
its a refreshing change from the usual congos.. and with the same water parameters too...

that anal fin detail is a little hard to spot if they were small images.. or like you mentioned immature specimens..

i wouldn't of minded a nice shoal of them, but there were only 7 in a group of alestes so i got them all, they don't send big shipments of fish like these only contaminants can be picked up, i'm not shure on what size these grow up to ?but the males are mature fish and measure 2ins SL in our norm size book they say 4 ins, so any info would be appreciated.
thanks for your comments so far.

very nice fish, mick. over here we only usually see the A. caudalis which also sport a long trailing dorsal fin.

ranma, the moon tetras (Bathyaethiops breuseghemi) are quite different looking…

you could try similar set up as the caudalis, probably.
