    hi guys,
just been browsing amazon and wanted to get the baensch atlas since everyone's quoting from it. i came across two entries as follows:

    A) Aquarium Atlas Volume 1 to 5 (Baensch Freshwater)
Amazon.com: Aquarium Atlas (Volume 1): Rudiger Riehl, Hans A. Baensch: Books

    B) Baensch Aquarium Atlas Photo Index 1-5 (New Second Edition)
Amazon.com: Baensch Aquarium Atlas Photo Index 1-5 (New Second Edition) (v. 1-5): Hans A. Baensch, Gero W. Fischer: Books

question are they the same? or is one "better" than the other? or am i a twit and they are different books?!? this is one of the common problems on amazon for slower selling but evergreen books inbetween editions. another issue has to do with multiple authors but only one is quoted in the title.

essentially, i'd like to have a buffet style book with information on as many freshwater fishes as possible. since it costs so much i don't want to make a mistake!

advance thanks to the dudes and dudettes who answer!

    Hi Celtic,
I hope the new year was bountiful, pertaining to the Baensch book can't be of much help but if you like buffet style. You might want to try out this book by Warren Burgress( TFH ) It's a small but thick blue cover with lotsa of beautiful pictures and to the point kind of information. Costs about $60 bucks but well worth the money.
Something about the water & the fishes that calms me down.

The Baensch series is an ongoing one, for the simple reason that even a single thick volume has not the space to catalogue even a small percentage of aquarium fishes that exists. The German series is already at vol. 6 i think. I think Borders and Kinokuniya do stock Vols. 1-3 so you can go have a look to browse. Vols 1 and 2 cover most of the common species in the hobby, along with detailed sections on aquarium care and profiles of many plants. Personally I would prefer these two over the TFH books, which I find rather outdated and too sketchy.

    hi michael,
the year so far is good... hopefully it stays that way!
thanks for the heads-up will look at the book you mentioned.
i figured the exchange rate is real low now and am looking into getting a copy of diana walstad's book. which is why i'm looking into other "essential" fish books.

    budak,
i see the "learned" man has made an appearance... thanks for your input too! yes, TFH can be a bit sketchy. i have some discus publications from them which i keep just for the pictures.

The first link is for the actual Atlas and the second link is for a PHOTO INDEX of all the pictures in the first 5 volumes of the atlas. Big difference.

You can have a look at these books the next time you come to my place or at the next C328 meeting.

Actually, I'm looking for people who are insterested in helping out to review aquatic literature.

    Anyone?

    Cheers,

I've got the 1-5 Baensch photo index and the 1st volume of the Aquarium Atlas. I also have the 1st volume of the Cichlid Atlas and also vol 1-3 of the marine edition. I think the photo index is the must have in your collection.

    benny,
just as i suspected. aren't these books heavy to lug to C328?

    BFG,
i think you're right about the photo one first!

    valice,
if you like i can put your order with mine. just pay the direct amount for the exchange rate the credit charges me. i think the rate is now $1.64 plus another 1 to 2 cent added by the bank. leaches aren't they!!
