Gonna to set up the tank [just the water/sand/filter first] this wkend.
    thanks.

Measure the salinity using a Hydrometer or refractometer. Anything between 1.021 - 1.025 is fine.

    thanks for the advice.
as this is my first time, just want to have a rough gauge of how much salt to add to get to the target salinity without minimum number of trials.

note that different salt brands will give you diff SG for the same ratio of salt n tap water.
the packaging should tell you what's the mix ratio's like.
but best to have at least a swing arm hydrometer on hand.

Hi peter, can share with us your tank info (eg. size & accessories)?

cos mine just started last may, so probably can venture together.

    many thanks in advance!

thanks. I hv actually got a hygrometer already. Purpose of asking the amount of salt to mix is to get near the target salinity then fine-tune with hygrometer[hydrometer?? ] I think should be hydrometer [hygrometer is for humidity, sorry] But may get a refractometer ultimately.

I hv 3~4 planted tanks at home and in office: one 3ft, one 2ft, one JBJ12gnanocube, one pico 1ftx 1ftx 1.5ftH in office. don't know yet which to convert or get new tank

may be starting small, just to "test-water" a bit. Always got a phobia on starting a marine but guess should be ok to play around with a pico first for the FOwLR to gain some fundamentals first before going BIG.

So far i hv got some sand [not live sand], a bag of MarineEnvironment salt, a hydrometer, next to get a filter, and get the water mix/flowing and maybe add a few pcs of LR a week later? if ok add more LR to about 30% vol then let it run a month or two then get a skimmer? btw, looking a the RedSea Prizm, looks cool. is it good? $, $, $ Got to be patient, target may be half a year to experiment first. And then get some test kits for all the chemistry checks if lucky add one fish, just one. don't wish to kill innocent lifes. Or maybe some shrimps first, before the fish.

Well that is my plan, not very "glamorous" actually.

Mind share some pics of your setup?

    Hi peter, my humble tank.
3'(L)x1.5'(D)x2'(H). using undergravel filter though was told not to. Some authors still swear by this primitive but excellent bio filter.
Base is 1" of grade 5 sand, top with 3" of grade 3 sand.
Surface skimmer connects to eheim 2226. Protein skimmer is overhang type, similar to Prizm. Mine is aquavial from pasir ris farm. $100 with UV.
Think Prizm is good for beginners like us.
Lighting is 4 FL tubes, 2 white 2 blue, not bright enough though.
Have plans to upgrade to T5.

A prizm hangon skimmer is overprice, imo. With that price, a MAcro might be better.

Nice tank! Take note of ur clam. It seems to be gapping. Try moving it higher nearer to the lights.

Is that an anemone? Dun think ur clown is hosting it. Check out this link. Certain clown will only host on certain anemone. And do watch out of it. One common death for anemone in aquarium is getting sucked by powerhead.

hmm... agree on the pricing... but does macro have hangon?

Yup that's an anemone, and the tomat is hosting it as the percula clowns don't.
    What is gapping?

Roger with the power head advice, thanks.

Lauchiao??? Who? Me only reef for ~3 yrs.

Gapping means its opening its mouth wide indicating unhealthy/stressed clam. If the mantle extend very long, its not getting enough lights. If the mantle retract, prepare for the worst.

I rem seeing some Macro skimmer that can hang but its not those flat design but cylindrical.

Weipro is ok for soft coral. Most of the time, the skimmate will be pretty watery. For the price, its a pretty decent.

    WOW! nice, man.
like your scaping, very aesthetically balanced at the golden ratio pt.
btw, what should be the ideal watt/gal? I read that if light too strong may bleach some corals?

how does a MAcro look like? Prizm looks good to me at the moment firstly can be used for bigger tank after my experimenting and secondly it does not take up more real-estate as it has small footprint, rather slender. btw how much is the ReaSea Prizm deluxe here?

Personally, I wun recommend a redsea delux, consider getting AquaC Remoro instead. There have been many unhappy Prizm user. U can check their price here, http://www.eaquanature.com/store/def...hp?cPath=40_60
