What is the worst fish to keep in a community tank? IMO, zebra danios are the worst in my experience, they are fast, voracious and over hyperactive, making the other fishes starving for food and spooking them all the time.

IMO, zebra danios are not that bad. They are just active, which is what danios do best. Don't keep shy fish with them and they will do well.

IMO, Rift cichlids and Neotropical cichlids are not good community fish at all. They are fierce, grow big and eat smaller fish and inverts. BUT, that said, they CAN be kept in a community tank, IF the tankmates are chosen correctly.

Thus, I would think there are no bad community fish, one would just have to choose their tank mates, decoration and tank size accordingly to achieve a successful community tank.

Ah, that said, the answer would be different if you were asking about worst community fish in a planted tank. Or if you were to set some limits as to the kind of fish in the community.

    But I digressed...

I have seen some folks buying juvenile red tail catfish as a bottoom feeder for their community tank. That has certainly got to be the worst nightmare.

    Cheers,

This is not a good question. If it's a community fish, then it's good with the rest of the folks.

    Haha... Plenty!!

    My top 5, would be:

    1) Red tailed cat. Often bought as 2-3" babies, they will slowly grow and eat their tank mates. The owners will only suspect when the fish reaches 1ft long and they will be scared when it reaches 2ft long. They will never imagine it can grow to more than 4ft long!

    2) Oscars. Mind you, I LOVE Oscars. But the same story, they are usually bought as babies, then they grow and eat their tankmates... Same story with most cichlids...

    3) African rift cichlids... Damn aggressive...

    4) Pacus.

    5) Jewel ciclids

Actually, I have an answer to the planted community question... Silver dollars. They are sold small, seem innocent, kind to tankmates... BUT they eat plants like no body's business...

Pacus.. Whoah. I guess the tank to hold them must be really big, after looking at how big our illegal immigrants in the reservoirs and ponds here.

My vote goes to juvenile Therapon jarbua. This fish can be caught at any of our beaches, and can thrive in freshwater. It is very beautiful when kept in a shaol. But put them into your community tank and the next day you will find all your fishes scaleless!

So yes, I agree with Justin... scale eating fishes are the worst in the community tank.

For the rest, you can catch them out when they grow too big.

Eh... this question is very subjective. It depends what the community comprises of too. You can put in an arowana if the tank mates are all largish. Arowanas with fei feng, siamese tigers, are not unusual.

Some people have had otos or plecos feeding on the slime of their larger tankmates.

I and a another guy have had 2 inch cigar fishes nipping the tails and fins of their arowana tank mate. The arowanas were 1.5 to 2 feet in length.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
