darn, I suspect I saw free floating ich. I saw my discus with a white spot
(1mm also got)
I've bought some hair grass some time back but couldn't install it cos of new tank being defective and needed replacement, so i left it floating on my old tank.
I also had some donated riccia from some other person which I discovered had snails.
today, I took up all the hair grass and put them into a small plastic container and put it under my MH lights. I noticed several small worm like things.
white colored, about 3 mm long, thinner than tubifex. and it is free swimming (at least can move about in the water)
any clues? juvenile snails? or worse.
doesn't look like hydra to me.

Wow... you got microscopic eyes! Dun think you can see free swimming ich with your naked eyes. Think DEA is the best person to answer your queries.
hi loupgarou
I have seen the worm that you have just descripted before once. It partically shot out from my filter after turning it on after my regular water change. I dont really know what it is but should be harmless and best of all my altums have a good feast......think the best person or rather persons to answer your question is DEA or Dan

chris, don't worry about it
just leave them alone and they'll go away soon
try to cut down on feeding though
and noo, you cannot see the ich ^ ^
Yo DEA,
i face that same problem( white worm-like free swimming stuff) with my marine tank when i switched off the lights. what are they? harmful? i tried to kill them by squeezing them. hehehe.. give me a high.. hahaha. Pls advice.
BTW, u own a farm or what, my high esteemed one..

......
anyway, marine worms i doubt that they're the same as the ones found in fw tanks
you might have more luck posting in the marine forum
my guess is that they shouldn't post a problem
*shrug*
DEA ! the last time I've this " worm problem " with my discus tank, I add some " salt " and it works ! , what you reckon ! Cheers man !

think they're not salt tolerant
how much salt did you add?
i don't like the idea of adding salt to wipe out the "worms" when controlling the feeding will do just as well, though
DEA and akoh,
guess adding salt does not do anything for those worms in my case. They are marine worms..hahaha..ok.. me shall ask that question in marine forum. Thanks DEA. btw, u know of anybody who can help me out on this? Help appreciated.

but what the heck are these? baby tubifex?
in marine tanks you get all sorts of lifeforms
they usually form a complex system, best not to interfere until you know for sure they're harmful
the ones in freshwater are nematodes
they flourish most prominently when you overfeed on a regular basis

It's not to say that you don't also have Ich... If your discus has "white spots" that look like coarse grains of salt, you may very well have it. But you cannot see Tomites (free-swimming stage of Ich) with your naked eye, no matter *how* good your eyesight is
I get these little worms all the time, even if I don't overfeed. If I fail to keep up with water changes, it's particularly bad. But the tanks in which I keep guppies rarely carry enough to be a "problem" because little fish slurp up the worms like chow mein. Sometimes they creep above the water line, but they have to go back in the water, eventually... Or I just add water to raise the level so the guppies can get to them. It's fun to watch

great. yeah. they are nematodes, came with the hair grass.
chris, why do you think they came in on the hair grass?
Hi all! I m new here ,
Had a discus tank which I feed beef heart and these 1mm-3mm worms appear in hundreds from nowhere one morning. I think they are feeding on the leftovers.
Try killing by hand but it split into two individual worms!! All my discus needed treatmt after that. Took a closer look at my two other goldfish tanks and found a few worms too. Even tried spring cleaning all my tanks but they keep coming back?? But the goldfish seems OK with it.

GF: its due to overfeeding.. try removing all uneaten food
came with the hair grass cos the hairgrass was newly introduced and floated at the top of my old tank while waiting for my new tank to get repaired. never seen it before, then when i took the hair grass into a seperate container and was beta testing my MH, saw those things..
