The scientific name is Hemianthus callitrichoides
I am dreaming of a lush HC lawn.
I've tried using the search function to find "HC" but to no avail. Can anyone provide the full name of HC so I can proceed with my own search?
Is there any thing/pointers to take note of when doing a HC lawn? As in:
(1) Do I plant them in tight groups or do I plant each individual (stalk?) evenly spaced out?
(2) How do HC propogate? Sideways or up? (I know glosso tend to grow upwards when light is not enough. This is what I fear most if I am going to have a HC lawn as my watt/volume is quite low and I'm too broke to change it)
(3) How to identify a HC lawn in the LFS? Any special cannot-go-wrong features? (Stupid question right? But my plant recognition skills are as bad as my face recognition skills )
Thanks in helping out. I'm new in this.

Hi Fraud,
Welcome to Aquatic Quotient!
Er...if you don't even know how it looks like, how can you be dreaming of one?
Just curious.
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
1. Plant in small groups spaced closely together.
2. It grows sideways.
3. It tends to do better in cooler waters. Mine turned to mush in 28C(fan cooled) and did much better when it was tranferred to an air conditioned environment(< 25C). Just to clear any doubts, substrate used was the same(Seachem Onyx), lights used were the same(36W over a 1.5ft) and ferts were the same(Ferka).
Call me Brian.
P.S. This is what part of the alphabet would look like if Q and R were eliminated.
Thank you for the warm welcome! Haha... Well the story is basically like this: I see many beautiful aquascapes and I say to myself: "Wow! Thats a nice lawn! One healthy mass of green! What plant is that?" then i read on further and it says "HC foregound". So actually all i can see is one beautiful mass of green but dunno wat it really looks like close up...Originally Posted by benny

Hey pple, I googled for Hemianthus callitrichoides and found this picture. Tot perhaps i would be of some help by putting it here for fellow sotong forumers like me who dunno how HC looks like...
(1) From the picture above it seems like HC can grow quite tall huh. So am I right to assume it requires reqular trimming in order to maintain that "carpet look", otherwise it will look like a nightmare of weeds?
(2) Can the trimmings be reused?
(3) Also, how long will it take to grow to this density?
Sorry for being such a pesky newbie.

It grows tall when there's insufficient light intensity. The trimmings can be reused.
If you want to grow HC, do not add yamato! HC is now cheaper.
If you've learnt, teach, if you have, give.
Don't walk behind me as I might not lead, don't walk in front of me as I might not follow. Walk beside me, as my friend.
Mohamad Rohaizal is my name. If it's too hard, use BFG. I don't mind.
can I ask why not to add yamato?Originally Posted by BFG

The yamatoes will dig the HC out and every morning when u wake up to see your HC floating around...... you will feel like murdering the Yamatoes....
Speaking from experiences......

Hi guys,
Is CO2 necessary to grow HC successfully?
Thanks
give lots of light, sufficient CO2 and your back to plant them into the gravel
NO ANIMALS WOULD BE THE BEST!!!!
Arrrgh...
Thot of having it in a low tech 1 ft tank (w/o CO2), keeping it simple.
Thanks lukeskwr
takes a while to grow. algae danger alert! neway the plant needs moderate light if not it will become like middle range plant. I have tried twice and failed!! will try again if i can afford the backache into a 2ft tank without any fishes or shrimps. bright light and CO2 injection will certainly help alot.Originally Posted by whoosh
This is my emmersed HC. I plant them outdoor on wet soil. Natural sunlight makes this plant grow like crazy.
(size : 180 x 40 (cm))
If you have a problem with algae or just want to stock them, just grows HC like this. After a few weeks, they will transform into emmersed leaves. You can put them back into your aquascape if you need it.

Jeffrey
ragn4rok, what kind of soil do you use? Must the emersed HC be kept soaked like that, or you can actually let it be more dry?

It's just a soil that usually sold by gardeners. The emmersed HC can be kept in dry condition. But, I think it grows much better and faster in wet soil.
