let me see.. hmm i used to hear my uncle tell me to pour hot water over it and then soak it in a pail over nite..

i was walking along the road one way when i saw a broken branch that looked quite nice
i brought it home, stripped the bark, and sand papered it
but it floats, aaargh
is it possible to soak it until it sinks? or did i waste my time?

I soaked mine in a pail of hot water >24hrs & it remained submerged. But it may differ wif different wood (?!)...

Don worry. It will sink when the wood absorb enuff water. Use a sinker or rather weight which is used in fishing... The main problem is finding a SUPERB looking branch......

i think boil it is safer... to rid it of the pesticide (if any) and other unwanted stuff.. u dun want your tank to kenna something later right???[:]

Chan told me that the brances tht he had taken and put into his tank actually slowly decompose...so it gets shorter and shorter...quite fast.too

If you can't boil it... (unless you own a indian curry pot)... soak it in a pail of just boiled water. Leave overnight, replace the water the next day with boiled water. Repeat as many times as you want, or as much as your conscience will allow you to pour away a pail of water everyday (I kept my water for flushing).
Two reasons:
1. Kill germs, bugs, etc, etc, etc.
2. The hot water will make the air in the wood expand, therefore forcing some out. When the water cools, the remaining air contracts, and water is soaked in to replace the vacuum.

Yimin, i dont strip off the bark. IT looks much better with bark on.
how you want the branch to be? totally submerged or with part jutting out of water? there are many ways to sink it depends on your configuration. But bascially you will need some suction cups, or small driftwood ..it all depends
the branch, if i can tell it had been lying at roadside for long, i will not take it in the first place. The best is those just fallen/cut off kind. If looks dry and clean enough, i will still take though.
choosing is the more important part then the preventive/remedy actions, because in many instances, like said, you need a huge pot or bathtub to boil them. Can be difficult
i had not boiled any of my branches before. But i do frequent water changes and use carbon for the first few weeks of use just in case.
with small ones i dont even bother

if it works out i'll be setting up my minitank tomorrow
