Red face

Read somewhere before about this...

Says that u find a small pet cage (those plastic ones with a lid) and place it in your tank with the lid open...

then put the favourite food of the fish you're trying to catch into the pet cage (like algae wafer ),
and wait for the fish to go in...

then when the fish is inside, u quickly shut the cage with a stick...
u might catch a lot of other fishes..lol... but now it's much easier to remove

Hope it works for you

Haha... A GAE is super difficult to catch... I used 2 nets to corner it and in the process created a Hiroshima in my tank...

Several methods.

1. After dark. Let the tank and room lights be off for about half and hour at night. Then turn on all tank lights and immediately try to net it.... if it doesn't not have a habit of hiding during lights out, in the first place. The sudden brightness will temporarily blind the fishes for just a few minutes. This I haven't tried myself, but mentioned fairly frequently n the forum.

2. Two nets... one of my preferred methods, even for SAE. A small one for herding, a large one as a trap. The large one, place it diagonally against against the glass, one side touching the glass and the bottom near to or touching the bottom. The other net, use it to herd (not chase) the fish to the front of the tank. Then try to herd it between the front glass and the large net... you know what to do next.

Herding means you move slow... the fish will try to sneak away from the small net. Where you place the small net, can sort of determine which way the fish will sneak. Chasing it will cause it panic and dart.

Code:
+--------------+

| \ |Front of tank
\
Big \
net \

3. Fish trap. 500ml drink bottle. Cut of the top, re-attach it reversed. Make sure you can easily unattach it again.

Put food inside, submerge it, wait. You will end up catching alot of the other fishes too, but once the CAE goes in, lift it out of the tank, remove the CAE, and return the rest of the fish.

Fish trap. Hopefully, you can figure out what I'm trying to show.

I've tried this at night with no tank light switch on with big and hungry SAE.

I drop a tablet food (fast sinking food) with a big net beside it facing the tank glass.

And just wait for it to come into range and pushes the net against the glass.

Perseverance produces result.

mdm, hope you don't mind that I move this thread to Aquatalk, since imho it's not related to beginner planted tanks

wake up in the middle of the night, turn on the surrounding lights.. very likely the fish you're trying to net will still be sleeping... it should be easier to net it then.

Problem is I don't know where the puffer is...

Probably hiding in the vallis-forest of some recess of the driftwood. I nearly caught it once when it was trying to grab a bloodworm from the worm feeding cup, missed it by a few cm...

Irritating bit is that for a small bugger, it darts like a small bullet as well! I will be making a bottle trap.

Just a question about this trap, when you cut the top off and insert the cut of portion in the "cup", won't that funnel portion float up/away? How do you keep that fixed in the cup without floating away?

Hoping I'll catch the greediest black widows/congos & the pygmy puffer.......
