why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Whoa, that's a nice looking danio and photo to boot. We just have the usual plain stuff around here.

Nice pix. Brachydanio is no longer a valid genus, in any case frankei is no longer recognised as a valid species, but an aquarium strain of D. rerio.

    Serious? Wow... A confirmation, finally...

Wonder when it is Poecilia sp.Endler's turn for confirmation?

that means you should write Danio rerio var. "frankei"

you can use www.fishbase.org they're are primarily geared for the scientists and are reasonably acurate.

what do you mean "confirmation"? the frankei has been accepted as such for a long time. google around see if you can find any info.

as for the Endler's Livebearer, it is fairly accepted that it is a separate species from the guppies. Unfortunately the livebearer group as a whole is quite given to hybriding so it makes it more confusing and difficult to prove. also losing the Endler's type locality and natural habitat does not help. Due to various circumstance, the Endler has never been described so the best you can do now is write it as Poecilia sp. "Endler's".

wow! eric do is very on the ball

just one thing, which I think is a problem with your font rather than the text, only the latin portion of the name is italicised, so var. "frankei" must not be italicised.

It's actually the font that's being used that it's causing it to italicize itself. I'll try the other one that I use at home later on tonight.

Well, I only relied on an old book, it wrote that the frankei is suspected to be a variety or sub-species... and I never bother to find out more after that...
