No, these are initialisms/abbreviations instead of acronyms. Initialisms and acroynms are part of the big group called abbreviation.

Acronyms are abbreviations that are pronounceable as a word, e.g. RAM (Random Access Memory), NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation). Initialisms are terms read as a series of letter, e.g. LFS (Local Fish Shop), ATM (Automated Teller Machine).

However, this could be contentious. Some are arguing against the above and makes no difference between acronyms/initialisms/abbreviations as the history of the differentiation is unclear.

Oxford English Dictionary and Chicago Manual of Style thinks otherwise and I belong to this camp. All acronyms are abbreviations but not all abbreviations are acronyms.

    Hahaha... nitpicking... *bleah*

I learnt something new today. Anyway, there was an old thread from 2003 or 2004, but it was edited and the abbreviations moved to a webpage which is no more accessible. I think I can dig out the data somehow. Give me a couple of days.

Meanwhile, feel free to add to this list. There are new abbreviations since then. Like T5.

    Thanks, gorilla83 for restarting this.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

FWIW (For what it's worth) - something that can be added to the list, hahaha - there is also the term contraction which refers to abbreviations that include the first and last letters of the full word, e.g. Mr., Ms., amt..

I just tried it. It works perfectly. What error message are you getting?

I don't think we should use abbreviations that have a well accepted common usage. e.g. WC is long established as Water Closet, so will only create confusion by giving it another meaning.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

You shouldn't be getting that. I just got a another member to test it and it works. Please try again.

    Yes, the link can work...

Choy, the list is for abbreviations used in AQ... But we'll look through the list and then decide which should be removed and their use discouraged...
