    Hi,

Heard from a LFS owner that there are two kinds of Narrow Leaf Java Fern. One that grows tall and one that remains around 15 cm in height.

Is this true? Can anyone clarify? And if this is indeed the case, how then, does one tell them apart.

    Thanks

    Hi fishbonez,
Don't really know about this but I do have 2 types in my own tank. The long ones are all over the place and of a darker green, the shorter ones are short, 'straight' and of a lighter shade but they were both purchased under narrow leaf java fern. Another difference is the long ones have uneven width for the leafs but the shorter ones are even throughout. Let's hear from the others too.

The owner of Colourful Aquarium (the one beside NA) told me that he sells this short version of narrow leaf too. I didn't buy it though... bloody expensive for me. You can see it in his main display tank where the counter is.

    thanks,

so it is highly likely that there are two species and not one that is grown under different conditions

Yup, actually the difference is quite distinctive. Sorry about the bad pic, quite bad with it, the bunch sitting on top the ledge is the short version. Maybe Benny cab help out here, can enlarge the picture a little bit, thanks.

It is most likely the same species but different 'variety'.

I believe Chan was referring to Microsorum pteropus ''Philippine''

yeap, indeed it is this particular fern, the clour texture of the leave is really attractive, it had got jade kind of green and the leave is neat and firm, upright, and it really looks very attractive.

but he say he not selling it, very pitiful.

does any one know which shop or farm had got such species on sales?

Try Far East Aquatics. They're the Tropica importer for Singapore.

I hope my previous post helps you.

I try to compare them side by side.

I think Microsorum pteropus "narrow" from Singapore is the same species with Microsorum pteropus "Needle leaves". My Needle leaves grows new leaves that looks like narrow from Singapore after being kept in my 685gallon outdoor aquarium with good circulation and 24hr non-stop water change. You can see the change if you look the 4th picture carefully. The new leaves are broader.

    Microsorum pteropus "narrow" from Tropica

    Microsorum pteropus "needle leaves"

    Leaves comparison :

    1. Microsorum pteropus "narrow" from Singapore ("needle leaves" ??? )
    2. Microsorum pteropus "needle leaves"
    3. Microsorum pteropus "narrow" from Tropica

I kept my Microsorum pteropus "needle leaves" in my indoor aquarium for 1 year and it never produced long leaves (see no. 2). After I move them to my outdoor tank, they suddenly change their leaves shape (see no. 1).

Can anyone here help me to make it clear? Thanks.

    Regards,

    Jeffrey

yes yes, its the one located at the left hand side below midwaist level 6 footer tank, upon entering the shop... as for if the plants are too ex.. in my humble opinion, think its pretty much affordable comparing to other lfs.
