PL light Eballast can use for T5 HO tube?

Anyone use PL light eballast 2 X 36 or 2 X 55w for T5 HO tube? I understand the tube for t5 actually requirement lower watts as PL tube.

I plan to change my light to T5 but don't wanna waste the eballast.

can anyone advise? thks!

are they HO type T5?

30W for 3ft is not HO. A HO set is 39watt for 3ft.

We need to change the light tubes once every 6 months anyway, so unless it drastically shortens the lifespan of the tubes, I'm not that concerned about it.

Any reason why it shorten the lifespan? the elbiru eballast label 40W it vottage too strong for T5 than it also too strong for PL too cause PL only 36W..???

U can get any of the makers specs. They will list down the various electric specs recommended.

the ballast wattage rating should be same or higher than the tube else the tube may not light up. if a 40w ballast is used on a 30w tube, the power used is 30w.

Just my opinion, i think that the german brand eballast called tritronic something should lengthen the life span of the tubes due to that before firing up the tubes, it will warm the tube up first...

just to clarify and relate my experience; the 3ft dymax T5 (the silver case with blue ends) is 2x21W, not 30W. I clarified with the local agent and they acknowledged that on some batches, it was equiped with tubes labelled as 30W, but in fact it is a printing error.

I've used a 39W t5HO tube on the dymax, and it can fire up. Intensity is about the same as the 21W tubes, which is nowhere near as bright as correctly ballasted t5HO.

A T5HO tube is 24W and 3ft is 39W. Anything lower is not High Output.

For fixture, there are lots of brands and models avail. Try visiting a few LFS or some of the merchants in this forum for more info. Off my mind, I know of dymax (yes, they have HO), Solite, Arcadia, etc.

I second Solonavi. Lots of brand for T5HO.

You can also try Nature Aquarium at thompson road, they have thier "house brands" and price vs quality is quite ok. or you can also buy retrofit sets (without casing), for example at Aquamarine, jln kayu.

Depends on your brand & type of eballast - For Elbiru brand, they have the commonly used ER & the EB type. ER is not SISIR-approved (cheaper but smaller ballast size) & EB is SISIR-appoved (about $10 more and bigger). SISIR-approved simply means that it has been tested to produce the rated output with only 1 type of lamp, be it T5 or T8, but doesn't mean it can't be used for both. So if you want to use it for lamp other than it's tested type, then the output power is not guaranteed. ER, on the other hand, it's not sent for SISIR-approval (but that doesn't mean it failed, cos' approval stamp cost money), therefore use it at your own risk.

I'd called Elbiru and the boss (probably) refered me to a shop that carries many models of ELbiru eballast:

Lian Eng Electric at Kelantan Rd closes shortly after 5pm daily, that doesn't quite fit into my schedule.

sisir is defunct, replaced with psb. passing psb means the electrical appliance is safe to use. psb, just like any other safety testing body, does not assure the quality of a product.
