Last Sunday was a bad hiking trip to the summit of Gunung Gading. The thunder storm came just the moment I reached the summit of this mountain. It was cold & wet, and I couldn't explore the lower montane forest of this mountain & forced to descending when the rainfall. When I reached the starting point, I was totally exhausted, hungry and hardly could walk properly.

The giant bud of Rafflesia tuan-mudae. There is a green tag attached on a small plant near the bud. The size is almost as big as a football. Rafflesia is the largest flower on earth. It is a parasitic plant which only consists of a single flower and it does not has the leaf, stem or roots. In order to survive, it has microscopic threads growing inside the host vine (genus name = Tetrastigma) and absorb the nutrients of the host. There are 9 species of Rafflesia found in the jungle of Borneo. They are : R. arnoldii, R. borneensis, R. ciliata, R. hasseltii, R. keithii, R. pricei, R. tengku-adlinii, R. tuan-mudae and R. witkampii.

This is the summit of Gunung Gading. There is an abandoned British army camp (or ruin ??) at the summit. The arrow is pointing to the direction of Batu Berkubu. (Fort) Batu Berkubu was used to be the old Communist guerrilla base camp during the insurgency in 1960s. You can not see any views at the summit as the views are blocked by the trees there.

why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.
