    Ranma, one of your fish from today is something I had picked up from TB Ben, interestingly the caudal spot reduces in size as the fish grows larger, and also there appear to be sexual dimorphism, one has blush body and short ventral fin, while the other has yellowish body with long ventral fin. Here's a pix when it was still young, seem to be a deep-body type Moenkhausia.

    why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

    it actually has rather reddish fins when its in good colouration..

    it does, my pair has grown quite a bit and has the reddish dorsal, anal and caudal fins. Got some new pix too. They are now in my pond to make way for your new batch

    yah.. saw those chompers in my pics too..is this the specimen i passed to you or the one you shot form last time? i think mine is a little more yellow no??

    you're probably right! I'm trying to locate the reference. but wait, in the picture ID page of FB where I found this pix the text actually reads "Hy. heliacus"



    I just checked, this picture is linked to the Hy. heliacus page. well certainly this "transverse chevron-shaped bars along the horizontal midline of the body" feature matches up.
