    Hello guys,

I know that most of you here own a digital camera.

I'm going to get my first one so would you please recommend a digital camera which is user friendly and for 'shaky' hands?

The features I'm looking for are:
    -Price under $600
    -Good for shaky hands
-Sharp images & good for portraits. (I want to take pictures of plants & bugs mostly)
    -Portability

Maybe you would like to share your experience on the type of camera you've used before and those that you like?

    Cheers

the camera is good and has IS for shaky hands (it helps only hor, not magical cure), 12 optical zoom and the seller throws in a stack of wide-converter and close-up filters.

    Thanks Choy!

I'll read up more on this camera before contacting him to view it.
It looks quite big to me. Will check out the weight.

I was thinking of having something portable for my hiking trips to come.

You can try out Panasonic Lumix. I am using the FX-2. Good camera, slim, good Leica lens and with a very effective image stabiliser. Produces quite nice photos. Only one minus, noise at ISO 400 is terrible. But, OTOH, which compact camera have good noice performance at high ISO.

Oh... another shortfall, battery life is limited.

The Canon S2 is a pretty solid model; some folks have been able to take really nice bug and plant shots with that at the Botanic Gardens.

As for its size, here's a link with pictures that show the unit's relative size to a CD:

If noise is a problem - which could be if you're doing zoomed up, macro shots that involve a lot of cropping from taking pictures at maximum pixel count - there're software solutions that can help with that, e.g. Noise Ninja.

I would even go as far to say "which compact camera have good noise performance, period."

Choy, is 7000counts an issue for this second hand model?
    That's my only concern.

no no, like I was saying, digicams don't have real mechanical shutters, it doesn't matter how many pictures it had taken. more important whether the lens is clean (the front element anyway) whether body is dusty etc etc.

check for signs of it being dropped, smashed or wetted.

    Sure. Thanks for highlighting.

I was thinking of getting a brand new if the difference is a couple of hundreds. Its going to follow me for a long time

I'm also looking at the Panasonic Lumix. It's either the compact camera from the range or the Canon model you recommended.

    Many thanks!
