What is the main cause of it? I thought it only appears in new tank setups? How to get rid of it?

I found it mainly in low lighting tanks (under 2 wpg) and whenever additional lights were added, the problem was solved.

I also founf that silicate was the cause (mainly in non-planted tanks). Silicate absorbers in such tanks solves this problem as well.

i don't think light is a problem for my case. in fact i think it might be my light that is promoting the problem.

What's your light over your tank size then?

Brown algae imho is very easy to get rid of (let tank mature plus ototcinclus) and should it appear, it means you might be doing something that's not good (overfeeding, sunlight hitting that part of the tank etc).

Until you give us more data about the tank using the info sheet sticky, I doubt anybody can give you a concrete solution except for a general one. Is this a planted tank?

From your setup, it is probably due to a combination of overfeeding of algae wafer and new tank syndrome...

Your plecos, helicopter and oto should actually get rid of the brown algae for you nicely... I had mine cleared using just snails, and cutting back on my feeding!

Brown algae most of the time plague only newly setup tanks. Just scrape and siphon them away or introduce algae eaters like Otocinclus, they should go away as your tank stabilise.

Keep CO2 and fertilisers at a good level, otherwise, algae of other colours may follow.
