when it happens, can ph drop to 4+?
is it better to change water or add sodium bicarbonate?

a CRASH to 4+ is very rare
the most i've heard of is from 7 down to 5.8 or so
a long term condition of 4+ is very rare too
but it happens when you have a lot of decaying material in the tank (plant leaves) which you don't clear

i prefer to first change water, then add kH powder (sodium bicarbonate)
    nominal kH is 4

basically, i ripped out everything and redo.
changed the gravel but kept the filter untouched.
rescaped and replanted and added co2.
    did not check kh.

next day fishes was gasping for air so removed the fishes.
after work went to check ph and kh.
found ph to be 4+ and kh 2.

I am concern with fish grasping for air.
Don't think pH is the culprits.

DEA, adding the kH powder to increase the PH, do we get the same results with the sodium bicarbonate bought in NTUC that we used to make DIY CO2? (kH powder it increases the PH, right?)

Coz buying that is cheaper ($1) as compared to buying the kH powder.

How about the Carbonate hardness? What is the optimum hardness readings for planted tank?

    Carbonate hardness = kH

Oh! I see! Yeah .. then I can start keeping African cichlids since they prefer hard water and higher PH.

No need to buy those chemicals from LFS which cost a lot more! Just go NTUC or Liberty and get some bicarbonate of soda![]

when a crash happens, do not CHANGE too much water unless you are very sure of your ammonia level. This is because ammonia or ammonium (i'm confused bout the name) is significantly toxic at a higher ph. A little at a time is gonna be more helpful.

    true in a sense
but when you remove the water, the ammonia comes along with it
    no issues there

1st of all i feel that u shouldn't put in the fish so fast which in ur case immediately after u redo ur tank.. i feel that u should have let the condition stable then u start re-introducing the fish..

just my point of view only

well, previously i was wondering why the kh is always around 6-8.
now i know it is due to the previous substrate i used.
it looked like white marble so i assumed it to be inert.

now i am using aqua colisa.
i was lazy to check the kh after i redo the tank.
reintroduced the fish and added co2 straight away.
    so the story goes.......

In addition, the sudden ph change from approx 5 to about 7(ph of water coming out from our tap) implies a 100 fold increase..

    cheers
