Flora & fauna of Bau & Jambusan area

Gunung Staat(limestone hill):






All the plants are covered by a layer of mud which was washed down to the streams/rivers by flash flood recently due to heavy rainfall. (I was searching for aquatic plant in this area....but water is cloudy.....so can't find anything)







A jungle stream flowing pass the limestone. Puntius kuchingensis & Rasbora caudimaculata are found abundantly here.

Epirixanthes cylindrica, a saprophyte in the Polygalaceae.







Wild banana. (Musa borneensis)





Nepenthes northiana is an endangered species. It is an endemic species to Bau of Sarawak only !!! (rare species)

First time found a red-colored pitcher of Nepenthes ampullaria.








A species of aquatic plant, genus name is Vallisneria. (introduced species)








Rhinocochlis nasuta







Close-up picture. Take note there is a "horn" developed from the shell; hence it is called Rhinocochlis.

Snails need calcium carbonate (limestone) to build their shells. There is a high concentration of snails & slugs in this area. Hence, you can find different species of beautiful snails in this area. Some are endemic species to Borneo only.

A dead kingfisher trapped in a mist net set up by someone long time ago.







Another victim trapped & killed by the mist net : Rhinoceros beetle. (Genus name is either Chalcosoma or Xylotrupes)

I destroyed this mist net after seeing so many dead animals hanging on the net.

How to identify those beetles? From the "horns"?

I think so, all the Chalcosoma I see from books have got two horns on the top.

Nice tortoise beetle... i cant really tell the species cos i'm no expert on them.. from picture furthest i can say is subfamily Cassidinae.. which isn't much help at all when you deal with insects.. its just too broad..

the other bug you have there is probably a Cicadellidae or more commonly known as a leafhopper.. again hard to tell species because it so broad. taxonomy follows..Order Homoptera, Suborder Auchenorrhyncha, Superfamily Cicadoidea, Family Cicadellidae. So its really a homopteran
