    I have to ask .....

if you need 100 watt for a 2 ft tank...

How many energy saving PL do you get???

the package outside says consume 20watt of electricity but you getting 100watt kind of brightness....

so do you get one Pl 20watt =100watt brightness
or five PL 20watt = 500 watt brightness

    I am confused[] ??????????????[]

thats the comparsion of brightness.. jus read the actual wattage..

if the bulb says to be 20w and is comparable to 100w then take 20w as the value

This is what I understand. When a light says 20W it will consumes 20W.
But that doesn't mean it will convert 100% to "20W" of brightness ... too bad else this will be a perfect world. Thus, Efficiency varies.

A poorly designed 100W may have the brightness of a 20W.
But then, brightness to you or to plant is another concern.

In this aspect, I am still learning ...... []

The comparisions are based on a normal incandescent bulb, i.e. the normal "yellow" light bulbs we use for lamps. So a 20W FL or PL that is equivalent to 100W means it takes 20W to produce the same aount of light as a 100W incandescent light bulb.

Watts is not an indication of brightness, it is the power usage.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.

If Watts is not an indication of brightnes and it is the power usage. then how does one determine how much brightness to use [:0] cos alway see people say watt per gallon or litre

so how does watt relate to brightness when you are using the energy saving ones?

    i getting blur leow[] []

Actually I hope to borrow a meter that can measure brightness meaningful for plants. This will be absolute. Not sure is there sure device available.

Just got a twin 2x15W lighting (S$60) ... to try out Riccia.
But can't see much brightness difference from my single 15W Boyu lighting with a new Aquastart tube. geee ...

I am as confuse ... Ha

I think u guys confusing yrself.. LOL..

light requirements for plants, dependent on depth of tank.. light penetration for FL is weak.. especially if u got a 2ft deep tank, PL is okie, MH/MH will be a good choice.. sometimes even if u achieve the 3watts per gal rule, doesnt mean yr plants will do well, u oso have to consider light penetration, which is oso depending on the clarity of the water, blockage.. & etc

deck, if u need a 100watts, get PL.. wat's the size of yr tank?

The Watts/Gallon rule historically applies to FLs and PLs.

simon... my tank is 2ft.... lousy 20watt F(pinkish)l plus another 21watt table lamp(daylight)...

the riccia on drift wood...takes ages to grow.....since a 2 month ago... and now balding[] just like my head... left a few pieces of riccia[]

so that's why think of upgrading...

Read the famous Amano nature aquarium book, those 6ft tank use up to 240-320 watt for light demanding plant... wow[:0]

what would the minimum wattage need for a 6x1.5x1.5ft tank...plant vaires medium to high demanding plant.....

Will the large wattage trip the DB... cos I have only one power point which need to contect to fillters, co2 and all that lights[]

deck.. u are a real joker.. referring your crop of hair as riccia.. hahaha..

anyway.. i find that.. 320W is a bit too much leh..imagine your electrical bill each month.. and the amt of maintenance that u have to do to retain the look.. sigh..

6ft 320 watts too much?? i dun understand i'm using 2 MH 150watts each which is 300watts i still find it isn't enough it just barely made it.eletrical bills doesn't raise sky high, it's usually the air con that causes it.

If u can pay for yr air con u can pay for MH +)
    Cheers!
