    hi all,
finally i am confused. Aargh!! Just bought a ph test kit to check out my water only to find that the solution turned blue (ph about 8+). Wondering how do i go about reducing the ph?? My tank is already CO2 injected with CO2 going into canister filter. Output has some bubbles (presumably CO2)
    KH is ard 4-5.

Cant figure out how to go about reducing the ph.

Another qns would be, do i buffer the water only when it has reached desired ph??

    Kindly enlighten.

    Thankz
    Charles

What time you check your pH? Is it a few hours after the light on? If that so, your high pH is indirectly due to high oxygen level produce by plant in the photosynthesis process. Anyway, are you sure the pH value is 8? I wonder whether the test kit expire or ........[] (no offence). By the way, please do not worry your pH too much as it is link to kH which play more important role in your planted tank. Your kH value is acceptable for normal planted tank.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

The kit could have been sitting on the LFS shelves longer then you think.

i finally know the culprit for the high ph. This was my first planted tank and a friend of mine gave me the gravel. just did a test on the gravel using vinegar and it efferves...meaning the substrate most prob contains calcium. Confirmed with my friend and he told me its coral sand.

Sigh.... alas i cant do anything, except to save money now to work on the next 4ft tank.

Don't worry too much. My 4ft tank also have coral sand. But pH seem quite OK at about 7 ~ 7.2. kH can range from 4 to 11!
Anyway, those plants that can survive have grown and flourished. And fish seem OK too.

Look on the bright side: No need to add baking soda to maintain kH. And no worries about Ca or Mg deficiency for plants.

    Cheers!
