tonina don't need, i'm growing them now under 27degrees celcius...good lighting & nutrients rich water is enough imo

US fissiden doing fine in my tank(temperature 25-27c)
Hi,
Just to share, Im running chiller but temp is set at 26-27degC and they are doing well.
mk
willow moss in my tank, run a temperature of 24 degree without chiller, it's turning brown but i guess it's being new, is trying to adapt initially
From my experience (a bit out of topic)
my tonina plant never ever grows well in my "sand" substrate,
many experts advice is to plant tonina plant in ADA Amazon "soil" substrate.
My point is apart from temperature, soil medium plays a very important role as well...

actually they need low pH

Thanks guys, everything noted, would get myself a resun CL450chiller for my 4ft soon ,nowadays weather very hot....anyone use before...thanks
its the peat in ada substrates which softened water; as tonina requires very soft water; 2dgh or below from my experiences.

it's about gh..general hardness, not kh

Its the other way around. Some species have low KH preference. The ADA aquasoil helps by lowering it using the peat effect.Originally Posted by 2-Hats

36C temp here, they grow like weeds for me.
You guys might have some humidity, but we have much hotter locations in CA, USA during the summer. 45C is not uncommon.
We still have snow in the Sierras though not more than 20-30 miles away.

Has anyone successfully grown tonina without using ADA substrate? They slowly melted away in my DIY substrate (laterite, vermiculite and a little peat with gravel top). I've added more peat to substrate before I planted them. Dosing EI. Also Tom, i remember you mentioned a while ago that tonina could be grown emersed? How did you do it? I seem to have more luck with emerse growing fussy stem plants than submersed.

To grow tonina good and real fast, just use lapis sand, high light (or low tank height), high co2 and lots of K.

I grew it fine in Flourite. anout 2-3" weekly, I get another 1" or so from the ADA soil per week, not that much difference. HC does much better though in ADA soil than Flourite, Elatine does about the same.Originally Posted by primavera
If you simply float Tonia, it'll form lots of new tips.

That is the exact condition I have in my tank...Originally Posted by lorba
Still the tonina juz melt as time goes by...
but I too have to admit that I did have successful in some tonina species...

What species were you growing?

I have another question: Am I right to assume that tonina does not have emergent growth, but with flowers above water? I can't remember where I saw the picture, but looked like eriocaulon flower spikes.
The reason why I wanted to grow them emergent was to not risk losing them when I'm away from KL (which is most of the year). That way, they won't be overshadowed by other stem plants or overrun by algae. My bro who takes care of my tanks back home can't tell the difference between rotalas and tonina...yeah, and sometimes skimps on water change and dosing for weeks on end too.
Still hoping that someone out there tried toninas out of water?

I have 60W in a 300l tank, no base fertilizer.
I guess I add peat to the filter that help to soften the water...
