Does anyone know what gas is released? I notice great big bubbles from the gravel will be released at the spot, 1-2 days after inserting Ferka Rosetta.

If it is degassing Nitrogen, wouldn't it be kinda wasted since it is released from the soil?

    What are your experiences?
    Warm regards,

Maybe you did not insert the capsule deep enough?
I don't experience the bubbling you mentioned...

How old is your substrate? Mine is 2-4 years old, and possibly mulm laden. I don't see bubbling from newly set up substrates.

I insert it to the bottom glass, 2-4 inches deep

i'd suggest you poke the substrate with your pincers.
i'm suspecting its a "dead" area with anerobic(?) bacteria.
i had this problem in my 4ft no tech tank.
echinodorus were growing fine but the root network didn't spread good enough.
thus causes areas to be anerobic.
i doubt the bubbling is caused by the ferka fert.

agree with celticfish, Think its anerobic substrate.. after insertion the substrate is less compact in that area and hence more gaseous excapes.

If it is anaerobic substrate, wouldn't gas be released the instant I poke the capsule in?

I normally shake the forceps a bit to get the gravel to refill the hole I caused before withdrawing the forceps. If there is any gas that is collected below, shouldn't it be released by the disturbance?

On the other hand, I notice this bubbling (burping I think may better describe the phemomena) at ONLY the spot the Rosetta is inserted, and it only burps for around 2 days. The next time I insert another tab (In exactly the same spot) it resumes burping again for 1-2 days.
    Warm regards,

Well then obviously it's the Rosetta that's causing the phenomenon.

Shouldn't be a worry. I expect the gas release is from reactions in the capsule. I observed bloating in my similar capsuled Dennerle fertiliser.

    Terence,

I'm not worrying about the burping. I'm having problem putting to words my thoughts on this observation.

I'm speculating that as the macro nutrients from the dissolved capsule gets broken down by substrate bacteria, one of the byproduct of this bacterial activity is reduction of Nitrate into Nitrogen gas which is burped out in the bubble. So in this situation, the plant doesn't get to enjoy the full dose of Nitrogen.

    What are your thoughts?
    Warm regards,

    Lawrence Lee
