It's a little known fact that the southern shores and islands of Singapore are actually very rich in marine life, with ample underwater reefs as well as tidal flats that host myriad animals and plants. The waters off Kusu Island and Raffles Lighthouse have populations of clownfish (aka Nemo fish) and butterflyfishes, while dolphins and dugongs can be seen at sites like St. John's Island. For non-divers, low tide are the best time to explore the lagoons and rocky shores without getting too wet, and this is what I found last week during a trip to Big Sister's Island.

As with terrestrial habitats, the first step to getting people to think about conservation is awareness –*so often, people think there is nothing worth preserving left. Why not consider finding out more about these lesser known islands? For newbies, there are also guided walks with experienced volunteers.

How did you get that close to the subject?

    Cheers,

Too bad that with the reclaimation going on all the time in our surrounding waters, the visibility level has dropped to only 2m...

Else will be a good place to dive...

Singapore waters is believed to house more critters than Malaysia's water. I had seen Pink Dophins, flat worms, nudibranch, seahorse, squids, cuttlefish etc etc while diving in Hantu. Not forgetting the hard corals along Pulau Salu that is going to blow you mind.

Debbie's site has been one of the best documenting local dives.

    Visibility over at Hantu varies!
On a good day, in can be as clear as the water in P.Aur!
Was there 2 weeks ago, visibility is low though.
2 to 3 meters at most!

actually I just want to go for a quiet day of picnic at low tide so the kids can play in the tidal pool. I remember hantu is very quiet yet has facilities like shelter, toilet and washing up water.

    getting there
There are no regular ferries to Pulau Hantu. You can hire a water taxi from West Coast Pier on an hourly basis. Rates will have to be negotiated with the boatman.

Check for marine plants and macro algae also.
try growing what you have locally in a marine planted tank if you seek a new but very rewarding project!
