I use about 1cm of JBL base fertiliser in my tank but I have seen people using .5cm and some even 2cm.
I am curious how thick of base fertiliser do you guys use for your planted tank ?

** Corrected the units from inch to cm ! Can the moderator help me to correct the units in the poll as well ? **

    So far, I used

    - >2cm for my ex-2ft tank
    - 0.5cm for my ex-1.5ft tank
    - 2cm for my current 4ft

Gravel gives me another 2-4cm above the basefert every time. Only difference I observed is the ease of adding root monsters - I had to 'chop' my root monster plugs into 2 or more pieces before adding them into my 1.5ft tank cos my substrate is too shallow :P

I use about 2 cm in my 5 ft tank. However, is not a question of how thick the base fertilizer is, but more of what percentage of the total substrate thickness that matters.

So for a 2.5 cm thick substrate in a tank, 1 cm is plenty. But for a 12 cm thick substrate (like those 5 or 8 ft set ups), then 1 cm is definitely not enough.

That's logical Benny since most of us slope the gravel.

I use about 1/3-1/4 of base fert height. So for 2-3 in sand and 1 inch base fert.

I think the poll is still open. That's why it can be activated anytime when someone votes on it.. Anyhow, no harm.

ADA Soil is not base fertilizer. You should still consider putting base fertilizers if you have plants like crypts, echinodorus.
