no sunlight?
Anyone else notice fish in captivity, excluding ornamental fish like B.splendes and goldfish, have much less impressive finnage as opposed to those in the wild? For my it's my Betta pugnax. The huge male in my tank has only a hint of tapering and a slight tinge of blue. But the ones i see in the wild are only 70% his size but have much MUCH more vibrant fins... Could it be the lack of females to entice him? or perhaps hormones that remain in the water...
no sunlight?

My tank's right up against the window... enough light for the plants to live on considering it's a 6ft with only 75 watt FL
Did you bring up him from young... or bought as he was so huge from the store?
Stronger competition for females? Female preference for pretty finnages?? Much larger volume of water?

I'm crypt collecting... Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted! ), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted! ), C.tonkinensis(Melted! ), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii
Oh, juggling is hard work, man!...
He's the offspring of a wild pair... had him since he was an egg in his dad's mouth
There are some wild betta species would show longer fins in captivity because lack of fight...
Hence the weirdness of mine... he doesn't fight and yet has short, almost female looking fins. But the sports/bars/laddering(proper term?) on the fin and green colouration on the gill covers suggests it's a HE
it's a SHIM
