That's like the mammoth sabre tooth tiger of tetras. Looks like it'll give pirahnas a run for their money.

    Seriously, what fish is that?

    payara is the native name.
Actually it is quite abundant as a game fish.
    vampire characin
    Hydrolycus scomberoides

    mine are abt 4" long
i hope they will take more than 2years to reach over 18".
because i cannot provide them a large enough species tank before that..
est a 6ft for species tank.

They will do well with plants really not joking

yeah they are one big family

but this guy hunt differently from piranha

piranhas are like a pack of wild dogs...they hunt in packs and take pieces out of the prey

but this fella wins by size.
they swallow fish whole...the long teeth cannot be used for biting...they are more for holding onto prey.

Yeah, G.loomis - good stuff [] ! Ben, are you an angler? I'm an artificial lure angler myself - not the type who sit-and-wait-for-fish-to-bite type.

Anyway, back to the strange looking fish. Isz, are they from southern Texas or southern Florida? They look familiar and, if I'm not mistaken, grow to be really big and silverish. Fly fishermen like them on light tackle. When hooked, they would jump - almost like a brackish/freshwater marlin.

    Cheers,
    Roy
