Azmi told me the one with prominent cheek stripe is male. Anyway I always ask him to catch fish for me, so if he tells me I got 3 pairs I must have 3 pairs.Originally Posted by hwchoy
So how MrTree, time to fly back to Singapore?
I notice that of my two fish, one has very prominent cheek stripe, while the other is very faint. is it sexual dimorphism?

When the so-call male one settled down it actually has some pattern on the body and face.

Possibly, the one with more prominent cheek stripe is female, like another Sphaerihchtys species.
I just looked up Baensch Aquarium Atlas 2 and it was mentioned that this fish is quite rare.. maybe this info is already dated.. it mentioned that it was believe this fish has already extinct some time between 1979 and 1983.
So I'm probably not that far off when mentioned this fish is quite rare..
You are right.. according to the same fish atlas '...... in the female the bands behind the eye and on the throat are darker and broader; black to dark red'. Also, the male should have somewhat a convex throat.Originally Posted by bornNeo

Choy, paisay got to say this.. the pic you post is not a fair representation of the fish lah. If the fish's appearance looks like this Azmi has to prepare to shelf them
Mine is about 2 days inside my tank and they are not white anymore (yours looks like kissing fish ). They have this complex green sheen on the top near the head and primarily brown color for the rest of the body. They also have this light color line that runs from mid-body to the tail, along the 'tua-kut' of the fish.
Also, they are different from chocolate and samurai (scientific name too long to remember) in that they use their chiu-chiu as feelers like those bigger gouramis.
that's the problem, my fish are already settled, and feeding. but they still have this colour. same colour as when Azmi release them into the tank. Don't know if his fish has coloured up or not though.
I have no other agressive fish that disturbs them, and plenty of plants to hide, but they don't actually hide. they come out to the front and roam around.

I do noticed that in the shop, they are no so pale. Choy, could it be your set up?
Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
they are not so pale when under shade from direct flash. already reduce flash power but I think is more like flash angle. there is another pix with it under shade that shows the brown-grey body.
