I have tried many times too...Most continue to grow while floating ard in the tank. But as soon as I plant them in to the substrate, they melt...
I had one that melted till the very tip of the crown while it was in the substrate, then some offshoots appear. For some reason, a offshoot broke off and I left it floating around for some time till roots appear again. push it into the substrate and the whole plant disappear in 1 weeks time....give up liao. Somehow suspect Malaysian Trumpet snails is munching on it while it is in the substrate.

try plain old lapis sand.. you'll be surprised... for ADA you cannot push them all the way in.. any portion under the soil will melt and die. its hard to explain how i do it for ADA soil but perhaps other peopl will ahve other suggestions.

it's always good to have base fert but if you do not have, try inserting root monster

Is temperature and pH play a part? I tried in tank with following:

    Tank 1:
    temperature 26c
    pH 5-6

    Tank 2:
    temperature 28c
    pH 6-7

Mine was growing on lapis sand too... Untill it was crowded out by my hairgrass... Now into a ADA soil, it is melting... But using Ranma's suggested method, it is sprouting a new side shoot...

I'm dosing JBL Feropol 24 daily, using root fertiliser from Oceanfree.

Looks like it cannot take fertile soil only sand.
