Crinum natans is a very beautiful and graceful bulbous plant with dark-green leaves. Plant so the top 2/3 of the bulb is visible. When the plant grows older (if it is thriving) it sometimes forms small bulbs and sends a flower stem up to the water surface with a beautiful and aromatic lily flower. The plant varies considerably in leaf width and the shape of the leaf margin. It is also suitable for indoor ponds, and is not eaten by herbivorous fish. [TROPICA]

Pics are taken from EverGreen Aquarium, Bandung..

This is 5+ years old C. natans. The leaves is very long. It's about 1.8 m in length..

If not for the VERY long leaves, it would make an excellent background plant for most tanks... Does it go into a dormant period every year or at all?

It doesn't have a dormant period. The plants doesn't like being moved too frequently, otherwise, they will slow down the growth and dying.

Anyway, mine starts to grow its inflorescence after I insert root fert around its roots for 2 - 3 months. (Evergreen DIY root fert + Jobe's fert)

Hi, mine have narrower leaves and aren't so long. They have small shoots growing beside the parent plant. How can i remove the small ones? Uproot the entire parent plant? Thanks.

    Hi Puffer,

Just wait a little longer until the shoots grows bigger (around 20 - 30cm), then cut it off from the motherplant. No need to uproot entire plant

Hi Jeffrey, pardon me...when you said cut if off from motherplant, don't i have to uproot the entire plant? Because from what i see, the joint part between mother and daughter plant are beneath the substrate???

p/s: sorry folks, mine are actually crinum calamistratum.

I have this in the office tank. Didn't notice any dormant period. Leaves can grow quite long too.

    Hi Jeffrey,
That's a very impressive plant. However I find it difficult to use in an aquascape. Maybe because of it's size. What do you normally keep them with?

    Hi Stan,

Yes, it's difficult to use in an aquascape I keep them inside my outdoor tank with various kind of aquatic plant (In fact, I'm a plant collector ). I had already post them here about 4 - 6 months ago.

Here it is how I keep them in my outdoor tank

Anyway, now you can see the inflorescence

That looks wonderful, i guess you have lower temp than Jkt to be able to plant it so nicely there.
Your garden looks covered, what the water temp like?

Because of the rainy season, my tank is about 20 - 21 C
