Oh man... I can find the info anymore. There was a very good thread about T5 lighting in The Planted Tank Forum a year or more ago. The guy talked specifically about cooling only certain parts of the tube.

The technical info can be found on the web... I think i read it from Philips specifically. Else, it would be Osram.

It's not just about cooling the whole tube. It's got to do with the temperature differentential between 2 specific parts of the tube too. I'll see what I can dig out.

Cooling the ends of the tubes? Since the articles from Google did mention about cooling the electrodes...

I think both. There is an overall optimum temperature. And then there's an optimal temperature near or at the electrodes.

It is a very good read you provided...

Can we find such a small AC fan to mod into our light sets such that we could provide the necessary cooling to the electrodes? Most small fans are DC isn't it?

Guys, there is also an added advantage if you renew/change your electronic ballast too! I lost that thread from the same forum. There was a picture comparison between using a used ballast and a new ballast. The ones with a new ballast was brighter than the old ones of the same brand. Looks like this hobby is getting way into the wallet!

To make your T5 last longer, you need a e.ballast which will preheat itself before turning on. Osram makes one. The ballast is not hot but the ltube is pretty hot. A mini DC fan is available at your local electronic hobby store. You can tap the power from you ballast. I did it on my custom 54W HO T5 lights. But its too bright for my moss and Nana tank. I am looking for 10,000 or 12,000K temp. T5 54 W lights to give it the brightness without the red spectrum (algae loves red Spectrum)

Another way to get brighter output from your T5 is to overdrive it. Eg. 54 W Ballast and a 36W tube. The life of the tube will be shorter but given we do not need 20,000hrs (Osram rated) as we should change the tube once half life is reached as light output drops at this point, its worth a try. I read it somewhere but have not tried it yet. Another wayto save money is to buy the ballast which can drive 2 tubes at the same time. Hope this helps.

You can go to Sim Lim Tower, on the third or fourth floor, there is a shop called Sinter... Got the two usual brands of T5 E-ballast (Osram and Elburu)...

Else, there are the online merchants like DE Lightings and HorizonVentures...

For ovredriving of ballast & tube, where should we consider the power consumption take from? ballast or tube?
