During the inter-monsoon season, the weather is unpredictable. It rained almost everyday in the first 2 weeks of September. Then it stopped suddenly & the wind direction changed. The weather become very hot & dry. The wind blow the hazy (caused by open burning) from Kalimantan to Sarawak. And worst, farmers in Sarawak continue to clear the land by burning the bushes when the weather is getting dry.

Today, the visibility is getting low because the haze is getting thick. I'm really sick of this because nobody is caring much for the environment. Destruction of paradise on earth is almost everywhere.

    The hazy country road.

The big blackwater river - Batang Kayan. Water level was very high few weeks ago, but now it is dropping to very low level.

First location is a blackwater river at middle part of Batang Kayan basin. Hair grasses (Eleocharis sp.) are growing abundantly here.

This place looks like a perfect habitat for Cryptocoryne, but I only managed to find Barclaya motleyi. The upper part of this river is a HUGE oil palm plantation. According to local news, Sarawak state wants to become no.1 state for owing a huge area of oil palm plantation by year 2010. It is a good news to some people, but it is a DISASTER for our native flora & fauna.

Caught Baram snakehead (Channa baramensis) for the first time in Batang Kayan basin!!!

Close up picture of the body. Take note it has a lot of tiny black spots on the body. Channa baramensis coverage area is very wide in Sarawak!!!

Betta cf anabatoides also found here.

Last location - a tributary of Sarawak river.

I never expected to find Crypt at this spot! Most of them growing on the rock. The water is acidic.

Most probably it's Crypt. keei. Some of them even growing on the rock!!! Amazing!!!

Hope I can find Crypt in Sabah oneday. I think still got nobody find any Crypt in Sabah, so far.

I already sent 1 adult fish to Dr Tan. I think I'll send more in the future but this Betta is too rare & population is very low.

I heard the mountain streams in Sabah are mostly very rocky.....not a Crypt habitat.

Anyway,if I go there, I will head south to peat swamp area.....maybe big possiblity to find a Crypt there.

And, Java fern "Windelov" is native to Sabah, right? Anyone knows this fern is from which part of sabah???

I read that the Sabah/Kinabalu region is the youngest geologically in Sundaland..... maybe this and the nature of the terrain (with strong isolational features from the river valleys to the south) have helped hinder the spread of groups like the crypts.

A (very possible) new species of Crypt. was discovered very recently in West Malaysia. At the moment, I can't disclose anything. I will go to check it out in the future.

And also, wait for my coming report to hunt for a new species of fighting fish....which was discovered last year. I don't think anyone have seen it b4.
