Just wondering, I've always thought that cardinals and rummy noses when first bought will school but after a while when they are used to the tank and feel safe, they don't school anymore. Is this true? Anyone has cardinals which school even months after they kept them?

Mine doesn't school - they are all over the shop. I've about 40 of them and they did school initially. My black neon tetras school very nicely and there's only about 12 of them.

The lesson for the day is add a LH into community tank or dip net occassionally or get a bigger tank. Hmm... I think adding a LH would be a better option []

my rasboras hengeli normally school together and swim to/fro the length of my tank. funny thing is, while "following the leader", a few of them will "cheat" and turn back before those in front.[]

whenever someone stands at one end of the tank, they'll move to the other end. then they'll go on with their "game" when it's "safe".

last night, one "joker" (not me!) was cleaning one end of the tank and instead of moving away after that, she walked along the tank!

the rasboras moved till there's no space and "following the leader", they all jumped out of the water
]. the "leader" jumped higher than the rest and landed on the light cover for a second. then it realized the rest have gone back into the water, so it jumped back in!!!

    the "joker" got a lecture

About Shoaling fishes, I discovered that if the plant is lightly planted, or even bare (like Gan's ) they tend to school more because they feel insecure when there is less cover. In addition, they tend to swim together if there is a stronger flow. If your tank is heavily planted and less water current, they will be more relaxed and hang out one by one. As for me, I've got a perpetually bouncing cat which always keeping itself busy at scaring the fishes- day and night. So the 50+ cardinal in my 2m tank always school. The white cloud minnows joined in sometimes too....
Have I done my water change?

The first incarnation of my planted tank had a stand of Rotala indica off centre of the tank by itself. In the tank was about 50 neon tetras.

One day, they followed the leader around the plants. By the time the leader went one complete round, he caught sight of the tail end of his convoy, and decided to be a follower instead. They were racing around the plants for about 30 seconds, going faster and faster, trying to catch up with the fishes in front.

vinz, good one! that's why i always say it's good to sit in front of the tank in the mornings, with your coffee in your hand. then you'll be watching the fishes going round and round, till you realize you're late for work/school..[]

the tetras were swimming in circles in the holding tanks (like koi ponds), very funny to see
